What to expect on September 8, and why this meeting matters
The Road Commission board meets Tuesday, September 8, from 3 to 4 p.m. at 4400 S 26th Street. It is a public meeting in a public building. There is no registration, no sign-up sheet, and nothing to sign at the door.
There are two public comment periods: one at the start, for items on that day's agenda, and one at the end, for general road issues. You can speak at either. You can also say nothing at all. A full room is the point — attendance is the thing a board counts, and it is the only measure that has moved this project so far.
What has already come out of residents showing up: a revised clear-zone policy, some trees taken off the list and their X's painted over in black, re-surveys for people who spoke and left contact information, and an 18-month pilot to cost-share replacement trees. None of that came from an angry email.
What we are asking for on the 8th is narrow and checkable. Publish the list of trees that came off after the policy changed this summer. Put this project's money into rumble strips — credited in the agency's own presentation with a 55% crash reduction and already funded for all 130 miles — before it goes into removals. And hold one evening meeting so people who work during the day can attend.
